SMS/Text From Mountain Lion

First post here, just looking for some help/suggestions on if imessages can send SMS/Text Messages to non-iphones that do not use imessage. If this isn't possible I was curious to see if anyone had any suggestions for a third party application to do this. I've been searching for awhile now.
 
Yes, in messages use your aim account. Type the number you want to send SMS to, including the +1 (or other country code) and area code.
