SMS tones?

Has anyone else experienced this?
Whenever I receive an SMS my iPhone fails to alert me.

If my phone is locked the screen lights up as if I were to wake it up.
It shows that I have a message but obviously there is no alert.

When I'm listening to music, the music dips in volume but I don't hear any SMS tone as I usually would.

I've turned it off and on again and that fixed it temporarily.
But I adjusted the ringer volume, only by 1 and its happened again.
Turning it off and on again worked, but I altered the volume by the volume buttons when listening to music, so its not working again.

Anyone else experienced this?
I haven't restored my iPhone so that might fix it.

I own an 8GB 3G btw.

This is a common problem...turning my phone on and off again worked for me as well. All I can say is just wait for an update!

Yes this happens to me too. It turns into "vibrate". Very annoying.

Update should fix this.

There are some other threads concerning this problem. The Tri-tone seems to be the most susceptible to this problem. I use Glass and have not experienced this problem.

Yeah just after I posted this I noticed one of them.
I reset all settings and that solved it, I did however have to rearrange my homepage again, enter itunes and wifi passwords again.

However its started again!
I'll try changing the tone, although I do prefer the tri-tone

Does it with the horn wicked bad too. Why should we have to use tones we dont like, and when will they fix this? and furthermore, when we will get a better selection of SMS alerts anyway? Six? $300 and only six?!

this happened briefly on a version of last year's iphone too. It seems the sound card, or a portion thereof dedicated to system sounds, goes to sleep when inactive, and somehow doesn't wake up when needed.
