One thing that I enjoyed about Windows was the way that it auto-cleaned my desktop. Panther (10.3.2 is what I'm running) has a "snap to grid" feature in the Finder view options, but the grid leaves icons too far apart. Is there anything I can do to change this grid size?

thanks!

Try messing around with the icon size.

While in finder, with a focus on the desktop, go to the menubar->View->Show View Options and you can change the size of the icons. For different icons sizes, there are different grid sizes.

Hopefully this will be of some help

I too have found the grid size too big, much bigger than in Mac OS 9. Changing icon size does not affect the horizontal distance at all, only the vertical distance. It looks like the grid size was designed to fit well with 128x128 icons, but has huge gaps with smaller sizes (For example, try 16x16 icons with size 10 font  ). I looked through Finder's plist file but couldn't find any options for changing this.
