If IBM does make AltiVec/SIMD compatible G3, would Apple sneak it in product like iBook? Would they call it G3 iBook or G4 iBook?

I think it'll be called something like a "Super G4" or a "G4 Xtreme". The new 750s should be great in the iBook - and I think they may go into the eMac when they get Altivec.

what are you talking about "sneaking" it into the iBooks? if Apple put a new processor into them then i can't see any reasons why they wouldn't want to advertise them.

I said sneaking it in because it is unclear how they will promote such processor. Gobi 750GX with SIMD is pretty much a G4. But there is the issue of professional line and consumer line which is determined by G4 or G3. So it might make sense that they don't make a big deal out of G3 with SIMD and just sneak it in as faster G3 not a G4, even though Gobi 750GX is virtually a G4.

This could change once 970 hits the market, which will probably be called G5.

ah, i understand now.

since the Gobi would be very much like a G4 (and Apple is trying to get away from G4's) it might be better for them to just "sneak" it in.;) :)
