As 10.6 and OpenCL are going to be letting "any application tap into the vast gigaflops of GPU computing power previously available only to graphics applications", can we expect a flood of 8600Ms failing on systems belonging to people who previously weren't gaming etc ?

That's a good question. We can't really say since there isn't enough info out for Snow Leopard but if what we've read so far, there's a very good chance that the GPU will be under heavy usage a possibly fail soner rather than later.

I actually hope that Snow will strain my 8600. My GPU is already causing problems, but I don't want to go all the way to the Apple Store to be told that the problems aren't severe enough to have my GPU replaced or whatever. Hopefully, Snow will deliver the coup de grâce.
