Hey guys

I was just wondering, in preparation of Snow Leopard, what would be the best way to backup? Should I restore from a TM backup, or should I copy my files and data to a external hard drive and then put it back on my computer?

Thanks

are you planning on doing a clean install? if not, simply choosing the "upgrade" option will leave all of your applications and files intact (aka documents, pictures, etc... everything in your Home folder), while upgrading the OS itself to Snow Leopard. a backup might be a good idea in case something goes wrong during the upgrade, but can be deleted and updated to a Snow Leopard backup once upgrading is complete and no problems found

I think TM might be faster than doing it yourself manually.

Another option you could attempt, would be to create another partition on your HD and copy your files there. Install SL on your original partition and then move your files back and delete the 2nd partition.

assuming the Snow Leopard installation will read the Leopard TM backups without issue, using TM will probably be faster since it'll put things back where they need to go automatically. there isn't too much of a difference between the two- whichever you're more comfortable with, I think...

I believe Upgrade is the default selection in the new installer. If you want to do any of the other options you have to dive into Disk Utility. I think.

I wanted to make backup of my leopard too but i couldn't since it's read only... however! My mac is now backing up and it's transfering 22GB to the drive so snow leopard is making a new set of backups for it'self so in theory when you boot into OSX you should be able to choose your leopard backup. Thats my plan if all else fails. But once my itunes and iphoto is safe I'm happy

Thanks for the answers guys.

I just asked this question because time machine might back up unwanted files like old system preferences that make the computer sluggish and I was just wondering if it made a difference.

Does anyone know for sure if SL will work with TM backups?

I'm using the SL Dev release (GM).

I initially upgraded and all went fine (as far as the upgrade). However, I was experiencing some minor issues with the Dock and sometime the OS was sluggish.

I then did a clean install and restored my data from TIme Machine and all is running great now.

YMMV

This is exactly the answer I was looking for, thanks man

Restoring Data From Time Machine and Others

When you say that you did a fresh install of Snow Leopard and then restored your data from Time Machine is that automatic or did you manually choose what files to bring back from Time Machine?

Also, I have used Candybar to change my icons and folders. If I do the upgrade will they stay the same or will they be restored to factory settings?

And Finely Does Snow Leopard overwrite ever single system file or does it only change the ones needed?

Thanks
