Snow leopard background glitch

Every time I log in my background image does not load properly, weird bars appear in the image, or portions of the image appear in the wrong space. I have an early 08 20" imac 2.0ghz 4 gigs aftermarket RAM. If anyone has a solution, it would be appreciated very much.
