I have a 2010 iMac i7 27inch with SSD and hard drive.
I was updating some apps in preparation for Lion and one installer crapped out. ( I do not recall which app specifically failed, I was going alphabetically and was in the 'D' list.) I just restarted the install and I got an error when the OS attempted to mount the disk image. It said there were no supported file systems. Odd. So I checked one that had just mounted fine 10 minutes earlier. Same thing. So I did a restart. I figured I must have ejected something funny or I was downloading and installing too many updates all at once. I had done about 15 updates and I figured it was a good time to reboot.
Upon restart the grey screen appeared, the Apple logo appeared and then the spinning circle of lines. It hangs there. I gave it 20 minutes, and tried again. The iMac got super hot like it was going full bore on all CPUs. Three restarts later, I did a safe start. I got the progress bar and about 1/4 through this, the progress bar disappears and it hangs like before.
I did a verbose mode start up and got the following text (actually, I got a lot more, this seemed the most relevant to the process):
"BootCacheControl: could not unlink playlist /var/db/BootCache.playlist: Unknown error: -1
Bug: launchctl.c :2325 (23930):30: (dbfd = open(gjob_overrides_dbpath; 0_RDONLY | 0_EXLOCK | 0_CREAT, S_IRUSR | S_IWUSR)) != -1
"
One of the last applications I updated was Paragon NTFS 8 , so I figured perhaps it did something to tweak the boot sequence on the drive or such.
I did another reboot and used my Snow Leopard install disk. Disk Utility showed both the SSD and hard disk. Did a repair on both and it did find and fix a few things. Re boot, same problem.
I pulled out my trusty external boot drive, hit Option and booted up just fine. I have access to both disks and used SuperDuper to make back up images of both disks. I then ran Disk Warrior on both drives.
DW found some problems on the boot drive and I rebuilt the directory. On the secondary hard drive (non boot) it found issues and said it was not able to repair.
Retart. Same hang on start up, same place with the Bootcache.
Boot off external drive and ran Tech Tool Pro. Full suite. No issues.
So, here I am.
1. Any thoughts on what caused this and how I prevent it in the future? I have a time machine back up and an image of the current state in its FUBAR form.
2. If I do an erase and instal will a migration of my settings propagate this over? Or should I be relatively safe? I would hate to have to reinstall each app from scratch and do all the updates. But I don't want to chase my tail with this either.
3. Would it be better to attempt to enter myTime Machine and restore that way or do a fresh install and migrate over?
4. Would an archive and restore from SL save me time? Or even a direct upgrade to Lion? Can I install Lion on a drive other than the boot drive? I have Lion already downloaded from the app store, so it is available to me.
I guess I want to find the easist, fastest way to rebuild. I have plenty of back ups but the time invovled to reinstall is daunting, but I lost all weekend to attempting a fix. Is it worth trying a short cut to salvage my settings and such? Has anyone else experienced this?
Last, is there anything in terminal I can do via the SL CD or my boot drive that would help me delete an offending file or copy one over? It just seems that this BootCache.playlist file is where it hags. Is it as simple as copying it from the working boot copy and replacing the old one?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
