I had some video files in xVid format that don't seem to work anymore since upgrading to Snow Leopard. They play fine in VLC, but cannot run in Quicktime (and thus Front Row) anymore.

Anyone else having this problem?

Do you have Perian installed?

I take it that you don't have QuickTime 7 installed. It is optional install on the Snow Leopard distribution DVD. Install it. Install Perian.

That shouldn’t be necessary. XviDs are working fine for me with QTX + Perian, no QT7 installed.

Hmm. I do have perian installed. But it's left over from the Leopard installation. Perhaps I'll try reinstalling it.

Did you figure this out? I have not been able to play downloaded .avi files in QT7 PRO or QTX either. The file opens fine in VLC.

I have perian. I deleted and reinstalled it. Still wont work.

Is this a DivX file you know has played in QT+Perian previously? Sometimes certain files will play in VLC that are not handled properly by QT+Perian.

I have no way of telling 100% because I dont have leopard on my machine anymore. But I can say that I have never had this problem before upgrading to SL> Now no files with xvid will open, play or encode to apple tv in QT7pro.

Yup, reinstall Perian didn't help. As far as I can tell QT doesn't like anything encoded with xvid. I've tried a few workarounds I've found online, but I really want to get these working in QT cause I use Front Row for everything else. VLC is really inconvenient.

Okay, correction. There are some xVid files that QT seems to handle fine. Upon inspecting the ones it doesn't like, the only difference seems to be the audio codec which is 'vorb'. I think these files were encoded with Adobe Premiere years and years ago, so I'm not sure exactly what that is. Could that be the problem?

I don't know what exactly the problem is but when I tried using an xVid file on QTX it refused to play it so I went directly to the codecs at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html and downloaded the xvid codec.

Direct link for binary: http://n.ethz.ch/student/naegelic/download/XviD_1.0alpha.dmg

I followed the directions and created a QuickTime file in my library since it didn't exist yet. Putting both files in there.

Then my video was displaying but not the audio so I installed the A52 codec.

Direct link: http://www.cod3r.com/download/get.php?name=a52codec.dmg

After installing the codec I restarted QTX and everything seems to be running fine with xvid. Don't know if this will work for you but it seems to have fixed my problem.

Thanks for the help so far, folks. I have it narrowed down now.

xvid files that use the vorbis audio codec will not play. I tried installing the vorbis audio codec, but didn't have any luck.

Anyone know what else it might be?
