To give some background info, for the past week I've been trying to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro that shipped with Lion--- I know that this is possible via Target Disk mode, but I don't have access to another mac that didn't ship with Lion. So I've been improvising: I've tried setting up my PC with OSx86 (with much trial and error to get a working USB driver) and running the installer on that (and installing to an external disk whose contents I'd restore ti my laptop HD after the install.) But this just created a folder called "Mac OS X Install Data" with a bunch of packages--- I wasn't watching it the whole time it installed, but when I came back the machine had restarted, so I unplugged my disk and plugged it into my Mac.
So today I try the same thing except with a VMware image of Snow Leopard. I plugged my USB HD in, sent it to the VM, ran the installer, and when I came back the installer had closed (perhaps the VM rebooted?) and left behind the same "Mac OS X Install Data" folder. This is really strange, because this really shouldn't be happening for any reason. I had even tried installing every package to a partition on my HD (because this would be ipso facto installing Snow Leo)... but, alas, the partition is not bootable. I even tried using an OSx86 wizard that makes Snow Leo retail images bootable, but to no avail.
I'll try to pay attention to what it's doing and install again, but for now does anyone have any idea why it's leaving this folder there and not actually installing? Oh and FYI, I can't boot from the Install DVD in VMware because Apple doesn't want you virtualising OS X.
