Guys, I only have an upgrade $9.95 disk from Apple. I just bought
a new drive. Is there a way to install a fresh OS without going through
the pain of Leopard->Snow L. for no reason?

Yes. Just boot from the install disk (Power up, hold down the "C" key).

Using Disk Utilities from the menu, format the drive then install SL.
