On the advice of the Apple store I purchased the snow leopard 10.6 upgrade to update my macbook pro which was running 10.4. I have loaded the disc and hit install button, it then restarted the computer and is stuck at the apple insignia - its been about half an hour ....is this what is supposed to happen or is the next window asking you to install supposed to come up right away? Thank you for any advice!

Going to have to repair the disk, you can use the DVD you just bought and run Disk First Aid from there ... Disk Utility/First Aid and repair it.

Likely, it won't find anything, and you are going to need to run a Safe Boot (hold shift key on reboot) and then turn off all the login items, and run Font Boot and do a sweep for bad fonts.

There is also a support page for this at http://www.apple.com/support/snowleopard/ for all the rest of the stuff that can hang a Snow Leopard install.
