Has anyone noticed horrible performance with Preview?

I have the 1st aluminum macbook and purchased an HP C4500 to go with it. I was on 10.5 initially and used the HP app to manage the printer/scanner. I used my printer over wifi only.

Scans would take a few minutes, max. But it was never to annoying.

After a year or so I upgraded to 10.6, there was no longer an HP app and the preferred method was to use Preview. This has been an awful experience. Now scans typically timeout, or take minimum 20 minutes to complete a single page. If I use a resolution under 300 dpi the documents are impossible to read, and it still takes 20 minutes.

I just used the scanner via wifi on my work PC with the HP app and similar documents take minutes (1-2 max) even at the highest resolutions.

What gives? Does preview suck for you? Any ideas how to speed it up? Suddenly my scanner is a must use application for me.

Snow Leopard has been a severe disappointment on my macbook, it is much slower than 10.5 ever was.
