I have a user with an iPhone 4, still on ios 4 that is basically using the phone as a standalone and has never synced it.

I found this tread with advice about doing an itunes backup without syncing the iPhone.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3836032?start=0&tstart=0

What is the best way to get this iPhone syncing with itunes and then upgraded to ios 6 without losing all of the data and music on the phone? Can I backup without syncing in itunes and then restore after upgrading to ios 6?

Any tips will be super appreciated!!

You need software to transfer your music/movies/photos back to your PC. iTunes will not back that up for you. As for Apps, you have to authorize the iTunes software on your PC, before transferring your purchases over from your iPhone. Lastly, right click on the iPhone (in the left frame of iTunes) and click backup.
