I finally converted my MacBook Pro (early 2013) into a desktop solution with the help of a Hengedock. I'm using my old Asus 27 inch monitor for now which is adequate, but I'm looking to eventually upgrade to a monitor that offers "retina display" quality and IPS (mine has the cheaper TN and it's starting to grate on me). From what I read, 4K monitors can achieve this, but my MBP cannot drive 4K monitors (I'd have to upgrade to late 2013 or beyond MBP models).
But... would it make sense to get a 4K monitor and then downsize the display to 2K resolution? From what I understand, this would give the extra sharp, clear clarity that would closely mirror retina quality, and when I upgrade my MBP to one that can officially drive 4K, I won't need to purchase another monitor.
To complicate things further, I might opt to get dual displays, and haven't found any clear info that the latest MacBook Pro can drive TWO external monitors at 4K and 60hz resolution.
What external monitor solutions have you found to work best with an rMBP?
