Hey all,

so can someone please explain to me if I am a just a casual photographer do I really need telephoto feature on my iPhone. Or is this feature really for those who are professionals when taking photographs? What are the main differences when it comes to taking photos using telephoto feature compared to ultra wide and wide mode?

When it comes to the zoom out and zoom in features I guess I can just move closer to the subject right?

Dual optical image stabilisation- does the casual photographer need this?

HDR video recording with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps compared to 30 fps? Will this make a huge difference when recording videos for normal use?

sorry for questions that may sound silly but need to know as it will help me decide. As I am wanting the iPhone 12 mini as I hate the size of the xr I have and how heavy it is after holding it for long times. But then I know the iPhone 12 pro is lighter than the xr and overall size of the iPhone 12 pro is slightly smaller than xr. So trying to decide. I know end of the day it’s only I who can decide if I should take the iphone 12 pro too. I would appreciate input here.

thanks in advance

As a semi Pro Photographer when doing a job I will not be using any IPhone, I will be using my pro level Canon mirrorless rig. That said I will be going with the Pro Max due to it’s better camera and screen size. If you enjoy photography then get the best that you can because it will be the only camera you will always have on you.

I do enjoy taking photography but that’s in a sense of taking random photos or of special occasions or family photos. After reading other threads here. I am going to go with the non pro.

Same boat here. I like photography as much as the next guy but I typically take photos of my kids, which doesn’t usually require a lot of zoom, I’m not taking still life photos and editing in photoshop.. And my wife is a photographer so if we want real pictures she breaks out the DSLR.

For some reason this is much more difficult than last year, I think it’s because the screens and size are the same.

I preordered the pro, but chose in store pickup so I can compare them at the store and possibly change my mind..

I think it’s the opposite, pros will most likely be using dedicated equipment, so the average person would probably be more inclined to use it.

For me, I would not likely pay much extra, but I think I’ll use it occasionally. I was just watching the video of my daughter cheerleading we took yesterday and a zoom would have been very nice to have there. You can only get so close some times. Same thing goes for dance recitals and basketball games. I definitely won’t be using it every day, but it will come in very handy occasionally.

‘I am the same, but after losing many close friends and members of the family I’m firmly on the side of capturing the random moments the best I can

My 2c..

when I took lots of photos of my kids when they were younger I tended to use a telephoto lens to get candid shots where they weren’t ‘posing’ which I really liked. Telephoto on the iPhone is fine but not that big a deal - you’d probably be fine with the non pro

one thing I recently started really appreciating is Live Photos- having a photos widget on My Home Screen made me notice the little clips that iOS puts together for you. And among those they show the moving parts of the Live Photos has let of the video clip and I love it.
