I found a use for my current apple TV, and justified replacing it. So I went down to the apple store and bought the new 2021 ATV 4k.

First impressions of the hardware is generally good. It does feel perceptibly faster. I also did a side by side comparison, changing HDMI ports, and there is a slight difference in the way content is displayed. I think the picture quality is slightly better.

Wasn't expecting a revolutionanry leap, but I am happy thus far with the minor improvement in responsiveness.

However what has really surprised me is how much trouble I am having with the remote.

It connects fine, and certainly has a better tactile feel than the old remote.

However the jog function is really spotty for me. I am actually finding it harder to scrub through content vs the old remote.

Worst problem by far though is the way the center button is positioned. You scroll to whatever you want to select, and when you go to click confirm it quickly slides down to the selection below, and before you know it you have selected the wrong thing.

I decided to cull a bunch of old apps from my home screen, and it took me multiple tries to hold the button for jiggle mode, then select delete app, and then toggle up to confirm deletion. I kept on accidentally creating new folders, or selecting the option to cancel deletion.

It is still early days, and perhaps I need to adapt my muscle memory, but I think it will always be the case that you need to approach the select button with a lot of trepidation, or you will choose the wrong option.

We shall see, but I may end up just continuing on with the old ATV 4k, and using the iOS remote app.

yeah, I know where you’re coming from. The same thing has happened to me. However, I’ve grown new muscle memory. Now without thinking about it, I lift my thumb when moving to press the center button. It’s not really an issue any more.

Or, you could always sell the new silver remote and still use the new ATV. I’m sure you could get at least $50 for it. Maybe more if it’s still in short supply.

rest your finger on the ring, and a "donut with a dot" icon will appear on the timeline on the bottom of the screen. You're now in jog mode, and can use the ring for that.

Currently it's only available in apple's media player, (which is available for any app to use) If apps have written their own player, apple has yet to open the API for other developers.
For a couple popular examples Netflix, showtime, and HBOmax* use apple's player, so it works there. Disney+ made their own, so it won't work there.

*HBO wrote their own player, and it was very buggy, so within a week they updated their app again (happened in the past day or 2), and are using apple's again.
