It just dawned on me that the new USB-C port isn't going to let me do my usual firewire cable porting. Does Migration assistant use wifi-fi, or do I have to but the usb dongle thing?

Once you upgrade your old Mac to 10.10.3 that was released recently, you should be able to boot into Recovery OS (with Command+R snag key) and do a restore from your internal drive to some external USB HD drive. You need to make sure to keep the size of the destination drive to be smaller than the size of the internal SSD on your new rMB. Once that's done, you can boot rMB into Recovery OS also and do a full restore from external HD to internal SSD. Easy-peasy lemon-squeezy :)

You will, of course, need USB-C to USB3 adapter for this and Apple sells two kinds (USB-only and HDMI/USB/charge-through).
