So how does a "pre-order" work?

Do I go into an Apple Store and pay up front for the phone? Or just reserve one?

I've never pre-ordered one before.

You can preorder online, pay for the phone up front and have it shipped to your house or pickup in store. Or, you can do reserve for pickup. They will hold one for you to pay for and pick up at the Apple store.
