I am. I’ll test my 10 core Vega 64 against a 32 core m1 Max model I have coming in.
For work I only really do video editing. My 16 GB M1 MacBook Pro is about as fast as the iMac Pro in timeline performance, but render out is about 33 to 40% slower.
The new max model GPU is as fast or significantly faster depending on if you look at pixel fill rate than the GPU in the iMac Pro. It has other efficiencies the Which bring it up to roughly the speed of an RTX 2080 super GeForce desktop card.
There are other items at play here though including the dual proRes encoders, The faster CPU, and the vastly higher memory bandwdith which leads me to believe that the M1 Pro Max-based laptop should be faster than iMac pro. In video editing with final cut it may be significantly faster… Mostly due to those encoder blocks.
The big question is just how much time will it save and how much more fluid will the timeline performance be? It’s not like the iMac Pro is slow unless you start running multiple streams of six or 8K footage. It’s still a fast machine even today.
I was going to trade in the iMac Pro, but in the end because I also use it a lot as a PC on windows, I would likely keep it and keep the 16 inch machine. If the 16 inch Max laptop turns out to be significantly faster, I will use the iMac as an airplay display against the laptop, as well as a backup Mac and Windows PC. Which is very ironic.
