I've got a white 16 GB 3G iPhone that was purchased in December 2008, custom-colored by ColorWare PC and is FACTORY UNLOCKED by Apple (purchased in Italy), one of the few countries that sell FULLY UNLOCKED iPhones.

on ebay, youll likely find people (either dumb or who really hate contracts) willing to pay somewhere around $500 (my original 8gig went for $500 on ebay last year in august)

nope, good 'ol USA. Turned out it had the 5.08 baseband and could have been unlocked. probably coulda got 500+ for it. oh well.
