I would say two things 1, it's old and 2, it wasn't kept at a medium charge and powered down but left to go flat.
So i put my iPhone 3GS on charge after not using it for a month or two.
Plugged the cable into my Mac Pro, sat the iPhone on the handle and plugged the cable in.
It powered up, started charging, and a few minutes later.
Bang.

But how is it that it would do that?
Storing the battery either with no charge or to much charge is bad for it and affects the stability of the chemicals.
