so when the iPhone 5 arrives at my Verizon store they will swap it for me, but what would I need to do to securely erase any personal data on the 4s? I just wanna air on the cautious side

I wonder if I can get a loaner phone. I preordered one last night through apple, but my 3gs wont even charge it has been like this for 3 weeks, so I don't even have a phone right now. Would I have to go through apple or at&t?
VZ has the best customer service. When i went intop at&t a few weeks back they didn't mention anything and apple said i could buy a brand new 3gs for 150 which made no sense.
