It's to my undestanding that you will be required to activate in the apple store upon purchase

You must activate it at the Apple store. ANY OTHER inquiries regarding the ACCOUNT I suggest you deal with it at the AT&T Store or call 611 (customer service). Any issues regarding the phone itself - go to the Apple Store.
