This phone did not affect my contract in any way, so in theory, they should unlock this phone for me upon my request right?

I tried calling just now but I was on hold for like 20 mins and had to hang up.

Yes they will. You can do it online at https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/termsAndCondition

As long as your not under a contract you will be able to unlock at that website.
