Has there been any updated information?

My grandson has been wanting an iPod touch for a while, but I’m not willing to buy one with software as old as the most recent generation, but not really willing to get him a phone.

Any evidence that this is really gonna happen?

Evidence? No. Rumors? Yes. It was rumored to debut in March and that didn’t happen. At this point, it’s either in the fall or likely not at all. (No intention to make that Rhyme.) I don’t see much of a demographic for the iPod anymore, not when the iPhone has consumed the iPod almost entirely.

That's what I'm thinking. I think it stinks just because I'm not willing to buy a phone for an 8yo, but he'd love an iPod. I guess I'll wind up buying him a phone and just not activating service on it.

Last year I replaced my nano with a touch. That was the biggest waste of money I ever spent. It didn't play nice with my Android phone at the time when I used Android auto in my car. Kept causing crashes on my Android. So I ended up using my Android phone via BT for music to resolve it because I needed to use Android Auto for Carplay Google Maps/Waze. With the Ipod touch plugged in it always crashed Android Auto. This didn't happen with the nano plugged in. Got fed up with it. Then I later got an Iphone and that really nailed the Touch coffin for me. It became a paper weight to me. Apple should just turn the touch into audiophile device and sell it as high res dac for niche demographic. Or kill it off.

Well, since Apple announced Apple Arcade, there's still hope for an updated Touch. Apple was touting the Touch as their portable gaming console, so an updated Touch would go nicely with their Apple Arcade service. Here's hoping for an updated one in September.

I really hope they wind up with one. I think there’s a market for sure. I realize people with phones aren’t gonna buy iPod touch, but I feel like there would be a really big market with kids too young for phones. Of course I could be wrong - I guess those kids could get other handhelds, but the touch just opens up that whole world of apps, and of course, music.

Unfortunately it seems more and more likely that the iPod touch is dead. I personally believe that if Apple planned to release it this year, they would have done so during that week of random announcements.

On the other hand, I'm sure your grandson would love the 9.7 inch iPad. You can find it pretty easily from retailers in the $250 range, and I would argue its a more fun device for a 9-year old kid than an unactivated phone.

My grandkids all have iPads. I certainly think it’s a more useful device than an iPod or deactivated phone, but he’s just been wanting an iPod for whatever reason. It’s definitely not gonna be the end of the world if it doesn’t happen.

No news at all.

I think Apple will either release the Touch 7 before iOS 13 is released (probably just before iOS 13 is released) or will cancel the Touch line when iOS 13 is announced.

The Touch 6 runs the latest iOS software and should run iOS 13 when it is released this fall. I would have no issues in getting one.

The Touch 6 is pretty good. I enjoy mine.

Battery life is greatly affected by what you do with it, however. I turn off Airplane mode only to sync it in iTunes. Those who want all the bells and whistles to work will be recharging frequently.

The iPad Mini isn't a bad deal at all and has a much, much bigger battery. The 128G Mini 4 is at the Refurb Store for $309

Thanks! My grandson actually already has a 6th generation iPad; he's just been asking for an iPod touch for a while. I have no clue why he "needs" that. ;-p

Honestly, he'll probably wind up getting a Nintendo Switch from this Granny instead. ;)

FiiO x5 / M7 / M9 are all perfectly acceptable iPod alternatives that offer much better hardware and software solutions at this point.

We will get a big clue on June 3 during the WWDC keynote. If iOS13 is supported on current iPod touch (A8+1GB RAM) then Apple may do nothing for another year. If iOS13 does not support A8+1GB RAM devices then Apple will either update the Touch before September iOS13 release or they will discontinue. If they discontinue my guess is that it would likely happen on June 3 or soon after because current iPod touch would be a lame duck.

We will see but I'm pretty sure that the Touch 6 will run iOS 13. For all new products currently sold, Apple gives at least one year of upgrades to the newest iOS. The Touch 6 is currently being sold as new so I expect iOS 13 to run on the Touch 6 and the Touch 6 to either be discontinued or updated before iOS 13 is released.

If that is true then certainly iOS 13 would be the last for both the 6th gen touch and iPhone 6. 1GB of RAM struggles on both with iOS12. Opening Downcast app on my 6th gen touch takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r. That aside my 6th gen touch is perfectly serviceable for the gym which is where I use it EXCEPT the battery now lasts between 1-2 hrs. I now get "low battery warning" from fully charged before my workout is over. If 7th gen iPod touch appears and it has the same weak battery as the 6th gen - I'll look to getting an iPhone SE or even an iPhone 7 for the gym. My XS Max is just too big for gym and Downcast on Apple Watch can't yet do standalone playback.

I'm hoping Apple will decide to come out with the Touch 7 but it would have to be bigger or thicker to have a better battery life (I'm hoping thicker).

I also use my Touch 6 at the gym and have the same battery issues.
