... or atlas some nasty preference file.

Just browsing normally will occasionally send me to some PC "personal security spyware" site that downloads an .exe.

I don't think it's the site I'm visiting (it's just an online forum), but it redirects me to a bad site. What can be taking over my browser to do this?
 
So if it is a bad flash ad, where can it be corrected? Is that up to the site? Do I need to update my flashplayer? I recently updated it, and then the security update from apple changed it again.
 
It is not bad flash, or anything involving your computer. The problem lies on the server of the site you are browsing, and it directing you to the malware site. I'm assuming this is the one that looks like this:

In which case, you are fine. I always lol when it downloads the .exe to no avail on OS X.

Yup, pretty much exactly like that. Mimics an windows environment and downloads an .exe.
