of my hand will get me slapped.
..that are a different CODEC than the regular quicktime. I know for my PC I could get a whole bunch of different CODECs in one install. Is there anything like that for the Mac?

Regular QuickTime? What is that? Like QuickTime is just a wrapper for dozens of formats/codecs. Which one(s) are you looking for specifically?

Forget all the codec malarkey, download VLC and use it for all your avi files.

As usual thanks for the quick replys guys. Ill give it a shot when I get home from work.

I was not aware that Quicktime was a wrapper for many different codecs. Unfortunately I dont know how to tell how the AVIs I have are encoded.

Ill give these suggestions a go.

And DVDs too seeing as how it ignores the region setting and all :D

Now I hadn't noticed that - the only time I put a region 1 DVD in my PB it said I had 5 choices of region and it would then fix the reader (why???). Was this in fact DVD player saying this to me, not the Finder? In other words, does this mean that VLC will allow me to switch between regions as often as I want to?

All DVD players are region-locked (or should be but a lot aren't - certainly computer drives are) but VLC overrides the region coding. You'll find when you play a DVD in VLC you don't get all the crappy previews and piracy warnings because it goes straight to the menu.

I have an even mix of US and Australian DVDs and by using VLC instead of DVD player I don't have to worry about my 5 region changes.

VLC for Mac is just not good enough for me. On my MB it completely sucks(though I remember it worked fine on iBook). I have the latest version downloaded n still it`s almost unusable and crashes every now and then. To date I havent found a single avi file which doesnt work on QT but does in VLC. So it`s QT all the way as far as I m concerned.
