The golden question right now - is the 14" 10 Core M1 Max MacBook Pro going to match the 16" 10 Core M1 Max MacBook Pro???

GPU aside for now, is the 14" going to be able to match the 16" CPU performance with the same processor and keep as cool?

The GeekBench scores indicate it will.

I am asking, as I saw the 14" and 16" side-by-side and I was honestly a little taken aback by how big the 16" is. Borderline too big for me, but if it is the king in the CPU performance department it is a no brainer.....

Yes they run the same for the most part. What screen size do you prefer. The high power mode hasn’t produced much difference.

I think I am leaning towards the 14", but will visit an Apple store again before deciding...

They will perform identically in CPU tasks. No CPU task will come close to saturating the memory bandwidth of the M1 Pro, and that's the only thing that could be slower than the M1 Max.

There are issues with battery life on the 14”. I traded in my 14” max for a 16” pro. The 16” gives me all day battery life. the max was An impulse purchase to get the best but it takes a toll on battery life, your wallet and I just plain didn’t need it. Instead I upgraded ram to 32gb and ssd to 2tb.
