and it was a father day's present. Since it still works is it worth taking to an Apple store to fix? How much would I be out (Its not an Air, but the previous gen bought from the Apple refurb - guess that makes it an iPad 4)
 
IMO, $299 for a replacement iPad 4 is way too much money. Try and find a repair shop that will replace the glass for around $100 or less. Also you can wait for Best Buy to offer their guaranteed trade in on new models for any working tablet.
 
You have options. There are plenty of 3rd Party shops that will replace the screen for you without having to swap the entire device. Or, Apple is also a more expensive option.
