wont shut down. bought it monday. got it from my local apple store. 15”, 2.6GHz, 512GB, 16GB mem model. paid $2599.00 with an education discount.

so migration assistant went great. been using it since and loving it. even the touch bar. anyway, today i go to work and attempted to shut it down. it appeared to shut down as im used to with all other MBPs. so i closed it and put it in my backpack like ive always done. well when i get to my studio and unzip my backpack it sounds like a jet is in my backpack! i go to grab it and its too hot to hold. not liks gonna burn you, but def far too hot. i open it and the screen is black and all i can see is the outlined cursor. there is no power “button” like im used to so instantly i head to google to see how to force it to power down. using the touch bar finger pad was not working. at this point the thing is still racing and hot. so i call apple and get a nice lady. she walked me through a few dif key commands that she said should have worked. they didnt. she didnt know why and had no other troubleshooting advice. so she set me up with an appt at my local apple store tonight at 7 pm. keep in mind that this all happened at Noon. and there is no change. this computer just wont respond. i mean it has cooled since being removed from the backpack, but now its hot like youve been using it for a few hours. its already been too hot for too long IMO and wonder if the lithium cells, or any other components, have suffered any damage from the heat...? by the time i get to my appt this thing will have been on, unusable, and hot for around 7.5 hours. this worries me.

this is all such a kick in the junk too. im coming from a 2010 model. been waiting since 2016 and couldnt wait anymore. when i heard about the possible keyboard “fix” i jumped on it. and now this.

so... what do you all think? im pretty set on demanding a replacement if they dont just offer it straight up. am i too worried about the heat damaging components? im pretty sure its bad news for lithium cells to be that hot for that long. maybe i just ask them to replace the battery if they wont replace the whole machine? any other internals i should be concerned with regarding heat damage? and if they do replace a defective part, i should sit there and watch them delete the hard drive on the bunk machine right? if its not working how can i ensure they delete it?

sorry for the newbish questions. its just that for $3000+, after apple care, id better get a top performing machine. and i want to ensure my investment lasts as long as possible.

if they are able to “wake it up” and expect me to walk out of the store with this same machine... im not going to be happy.

thoughts?

...If it is still actually on and hot to the touch like you say then it should drain the battery pretty quick and force itself to shut down.

Problem solved? :p;)

i thought so too, but it hasnt. and now i dont want it to shut down only for apple to say "nothing wrong with it". so ive left it plugged in.

Well you are within your 14 days return period so no matter what you should not have a problem returning it, if they won't accept it due to some silly thing they mention, just say you want it repaired under warranty and see where that takes you

Ask for a replacement. Insist on it if they don't offer it. However, I suspect that you will walk out of the store this evening with a new machine.

considering the price and how new it is, i agree. you never know though.

does anyone think im too concerned about the heat? or is it a valid concern?

its crazy because since ive used it in the last two days ive thrown plenty at it and it hasnt even broken a sweat. now it wont shut down and its perma-hot. not cool.

EDIT* thanks for the quick replies everyone!

worst part about all of this is that i have a deadline to meet tonight and i am supposed to be working right now. ugh :(o_O

having to wait 7 hours for help sorta sucks. again... i paid top dollar for the machine.

Get a new machine. Frustrating when you've paid so much, I know, but it happens. Last year, a new iMac I'd just bought died on the second day for no apparent reason. This is a manufactured good--a small percentage will be defective.

got a new machine. they did ask some questions, but didnt really push back.

btw... when did apple stop including AC adapter extensions with the MBPs? we are expected to buy them separately now? wtf?

will the old extensions work with the new AC adapters? or could there be a dif rating or something?

Yes the old cables work.

They stopped providing the extension cable with the 2016 MBP. Its just a separate accessory as you suspected.

Can't you just hold down the fingerprint button for a few seconds to force it to turn off? Then just press the button again (I would wait until it's cooled off a bit) to reboot it.

This may have been just not waiting long enough before placing MBP in the bag. Happened to me few times on every of my prior MBPs (2008, 2010, and now 2017).
When I close the lid and cpu is hot, it may take up to minute before the fans cool everything down enough that they stop running. If you stick the MBP in the bag before the fans power down, they keep running, trying to cool it - but all they can get is hot air they are blowing out - no amount of fanning will cool the computer down and you end up actually over heating it just by the fans. Ends up in exactly this situation - fans full blast, computer hot, battery discharged, potentially even damaged.
This is simple physics and nothing is wrong with the computer. I learned to close the lid, wait until the fans power down and then stick in the bag. Takes longer if something intensive was running just before.
You may be replacing MBP forever if you want to prevent this.
Alternative is shut down the MBP as that will power down the fans and everything else (hot or cold) and this cannot happen. But as long as you will put it to sleep, you need to account for this.

Reading stuff like this makes me worried it’ll happen to to some of us, too :( mine is supposed to arrrieve by the end of today... if it move it’s *ss from freaking Belgium where it’s been stuck for 10 hours now

You are worried too much. Reports like this are not typical - typically these MBPs work fine. In this case I suspect the problem is user error (move the computer before it cools in tight hot bag). No computer on the market can handle that, if it has active cooling and is put to sleep. If you want to do that, you need passively cooled computer and those do not have very high power. Or just shut it down, these things do shut down relatively quickly and start relatively fast.
Basically, you cannot break laws of physics...

Yes the old cables work.

great to know! ive got one from my 2010 and one from a 2015. i was wondering if the 2010 adapter was too old and rated differently or something.

that is the biggest load of crap. i see that they expect you to pay an extra $19 for the extension.

no. i was on the horn with apple and we tried just about everything.

no this wasn't the issue. ive been using MBPs for years and this has never once happened to me. i googled my issue and saw others, even with older machines, had this issue where the screen is black and all you can see is the outline of the cursor.

nah dont sweat it. even the apple employees were stumped on this one. i legit got a bunk machine of which i think is rare. the replacement has been working exactly as expected. it shuts down when asked to. :D
