In a right pickle. I received my PAC code from O2 so I can switch my number to Orange for my iPhone 4. Now, when I received the SMS from O2 with the PAC code, my iPhone 3G was running iOS 4 rather poorly. That night, I downgraded to 3.1.3. I knew I would lose all my messages, and for some reason, I didn't think to check if there was anything I'd need. Of course.. I hadn't written the PAC code down.
Now, I still have the iOS 4 backup in my iTunes library as far as I'm aware. What's the best options for retrieving this SMS? If I upgrade the iPhone 3G to iOS 4 again, will iTunes give me the option to restore from a backup?
What if I choose to restore my new iPhone 4 from my iOS 4 backup? Would that work?
I'd really want to avoid upgrading the iPhone 3G to iOS 4 again, because I'm passing it on to a relative, and I'll have to downgrade it back to 3.1.3 again (seeing as iOS 4 basically kills the thing). Upgrading and downgrading is a lengthy PITA process.. but if it's the only way then I guess it'll have to be done.
Better add: I did call up O2 and ask for another PAC code. Told it would take 24 hours. That was 3 days ago.. my iPhone 4 arrives today (6th July) and I'd rather be able to use it as soon as possible. I'm not holding my breath for O2 getting round to sending me it again.
UPDATE:
Fecking typical.. I upgrade to iOS4, and can't select the old backup to restore from. Anyway, I didn't realise you could read the SMS database from backups and was able to find the PAC code hidden in there. What a waste of time doing all this, now in the process of downgrading back to 3.1.3!
