So now we know that the iPhone can't be used like an Apple Remote to control Front Row or AppleTV..., but could it be?

iPhone has WiFi and Bluetooth, but no IR. Maybe it can send commands to any Mac with WiFi and Bluetooth and via WiFi to AppleTV. It will be in a future update I think.

What do you think?

this has a way of doing something kinda like that... i mainly just used it for viewing my camera remotely, but it should work as a remote, just remember it's in alpha stage right now.

There is the proximity detector which uses infrared, but it may be a dedicated proximity detection system rather than something that could be used (or even hacked) to be a controllable IR interface. We'll see, I suppose.

Don't Apple remotes have BT? Or am I crazy? (I've never had one.)

Ahh.

Well, that seems like an oversight. I would've liked a BT + IR remote. Or better yet, a wireless (BT) Mighty Mouse with built-in Apple Remote IR port! Convergence! :D
