This lack of update update has really put a wrench in my plans.
I'm currently using a Mac Pro 1,1 (2,1 firmware) with 8x 2.66Ghz, 10 gig of ram and an SSD. Geekbench around 10,000 in 64 bit.
I have a 3rd Gen 64 gig iPad for couch surfing.
I had a 15" late 2008 MacBook Pro which I traded in for Apple Store Credit. The battery was shot and the machine just was a tad bulky for me and sat once I got the iPad.
I do mostly photo + video stuff ( lots of handbrake ) and work in IT. Starting a new job in a week.
I need to run Mountain Lion on my main machine. Well, the geek in me does. I planned on getting a new pro, turning my 1,1 into a server and running the new pro as my new workstation.
I was also kicking around the idea of getting an 11" Air down the line as I may need it with the new job, although I may be able to use the iPad mostly.
Well, now we have this cluster. To be honest I'm happy with the computational performance of my now 8 core machine. Compresses a blu-ray to a 720p rip in 2 hours or so and that was before adding 4 cores to it. But I'm not positive how stable it will be trying to run ML via the chameleon boot loader workaround.
So, I sit here with around 1,000 Apple credit and no worthwhile new Pro.
I'm kicking around the idea of going with the new 13" Air as the screen res is the same as my old 15". While its not retina, it is a higher PPI. The wife ok'd the 15" retina pro, but I'm not sure if the size/weight would be worth it.
As for the "Pro" I'm thinking of just trying to hack mine to run ML or try and score a 2009 8 core used as hell, it's the same hardware.
