Seems to me like nothing has changed except the published performance. As far as I know, they are still using the same panels. Apple have simply upped the figures to match what others - such as Dell - were claiming for the identical panels. Notice they aren't claiming that these are "new" monitors.

Do you mean to say that Apple has been *gasp* underselling themselves?
 
Most likely it means that LG, Samsung, or whoever else improved the specs to their panels in mid-stream and they updated the specs. It's similar to how a Week 28 Macbook won't really be exactly the same as a Week 10, but they're basically the same model.
