So there has to be 2 seperate firmwares? one for 1g iphone and 3g iphone?

i assume this because the 1g has no 3g option under general and under network, so it must be a different code.
 
Not all that different code, but iPhone EDGE is indicated by a 1,1 in the file name, and the iPhone 3G is indicated by a 1,2 in the file name.
