According to people familiar with the matter, the latest beta of iOS 4.1, due to ship in the coming weeks, includes three new "Configuration Descriptors" within its USB configuration files -- all of which pertain to devices that list "Apple, Inc." as their "manufacturer" -- as can be seen in the screenshot below.

The first product, a fourth-generation iPod touch, is referenced within the code as "iPod 4,1." That particular identifier indicates the device will be the first iteration of a fourth-generation device, rather than a revision to the touch's existing design, which would have been denoted as an "iPod 3,2."

no more black plastic, woot

So does that mean the new ipod touch, possibly the new ipod nano, will not play in the BOSE sound dock that I currently have? ...Because I spent 110$ to update the the connector to be able to charge my ipod touch 2g ...

I would think the connector would stay the same. Makes no sense to change it again so quickly.

only way to tell for sure is when iOS 4.1 is released

I actually believe all of this but there's always room to crack a joke on the "According to people familiar with the matter" opening. ;)

Here's hoping for a stellar iPod Touch as a soon to be Droid X owner I may want a Touch after all.

they won't change the connector but it may not fit if they drastically change the dimensions on the ipod touch

So was the 3rd gen iPod touch named the iPod2,2? I fail to see the logic behind this. I do think there is going to be some kind of redesign, but this isn't proof of it.

iprod could be the next apple tv that runs iOS.

No

The second unreleased product referenced in the USB configuration files is "iProd 2,1." All indications are that this device represents a material update to the company's iPad, as the inaugural version of the device released this past April was similarly listed in configuration files as "iProd 1,1" prior to its announcement.

Finally, and most intriguing, is a previously undiscovered mention of a mysterious device listed only as "unknownHardware." Although the configuration files tag this device with a unique Apple product ID of 20547, it's textual descriptor is similarly listed as "Unknown- Add device descriptor info for this device."

Well, the 3rd generation iPod touch also got a version # bump, 2,1 to 3,1 even though it was a very crappy update with no external changes. Nonetheless, I expect the 4th gen to be amazing, but I just don't see this as any valid proof.

I don't think that that proves there is going to be a redesign, but it proves there is a new iPod touch coming. There is a super high chance of a redesign coming though.

It definitely proves a new one is coming (aka there is 100% chance of a new touch of some sort at least before Christmas, but I don't think it will be that late), however, what it will look like and what specs it will have is up in the air.

Sorry guys, I should have done a bit more fact-checking before posting this

I'm just excited about the new iPod touch. A lot of good things have happened in my life recently so I feel like splurging on something nice :)

I really don't want to sign a 2 year at&t contract for an ipod ....
this just ruins it..
i saw it in the rumours..

how are we not going to sign it if it might have facetime

omg..

i hope they improve battery life :)

Facetime is over Wi Fi, and every version of the iPod touch has supported Wi Fi. No need to sign up for any kind of contract as it doesn't involve a cellular service.

It said here on a site that its 300 with contract and like 500-550 without contract :/

have you thought about a dock extender?

or there are now extension cables. just check ebay. they are $1. don't know if they work but I ordered one for 1 cent plus $3.99 shipping. so I will find out in a few weeks. i ordered it because if the cable works I can connect an iPad to my bose.

Look at apples history, they're not going to stay with a design for more than two years. (computers don't count) the touch is overdue for a redesign
