I was replacing the digitizer on my ipod 3rd gen, and tore this black piece, that i believe is just foam. Anyone have a better idea what it is? Thanks.

Not having threat experience of dismantling a touch, but I'd agree it's just a foam pad.
Nokia tends to use double-sided foam to create airtight acoustic chambers for the speakers / earpieces / mics, so assuming apple does similar, is there some audio component in the area? It might slightly affect the tone or volume if the seal is incomplete.

Alrighty, thanks. I haven't put it back together as I am waiting on an RMAed midsection and digitizer.
