and when I got home, I see they had accidentally given me a 3gs. I am unsure what to do and didn't notice it at the time as they look all similar and such
I am kidding lol. I wish that would happen one of these times!

Maybe they will let you keep it anyway.

They wouldn't have a choice lol, what's done is what's done. Most likely it's already been registered through that serial # and if they said bring it back, it's really their mistake and they can't just take it away or if he decides to take it back, make them pay for your gas :)

Hate to admit it, I would
play dumb and keep it. Oh gee..... I assumed you were simply out of that old model.

I would tell them the truth. What can I say - I'd rather be honest than have a fancier new toy. And if they let you keep it then best of both worlds. :)

You did nothing wrong. Im sure as many iphones as they handle they knew what they did. The writing on the back is clearly different. Now enjoy it and have a beer.

Sometimes it's better to be honest:

Alot of times if they dont have the replacement in the back they will upgrade you.
For instance.... my brothers old ipod got replaced with a new refurbished one.

I think they knew exactly what they were giving you.

Maybe they did run out of the 3G 16GB because they really only sell the 3G 8GB now. But, I would go back and let them know. Who knows, one day, it might help you in the future because either it will be karma or the apple genius will recognize you later in the future.

There are ways around that but for the most part, I agree.

People have the mistaken assumption that just because you are given something, they can get away completely free. That is not true whatsoever.

People need to look for hidden meanings (or other hidden things).

EDIT: Apparently I needed to refresh the page. When I posted this, no one else has noticed the hidden text.

when I had my 3G (now have a 3GS), I had to go in to replace it for a second time (first one just bricked, second one the external speaker died). The guy goes back, gives me a new one, home screen comes on, and it freezes for like 45 seconds. Then it was running super slow. He looks at me, says "you want a different one right?" I said yes.

He comes back with another one, works perfect, I left happy. But not as happy as I was when I got home, plugged it into my computer, and realized he gave me a 16GB instead of my old 8GB!!
