So what happens when a device in Lost Mode has a wipe attempt?

I have an iPhone that was stolen. It was put into Lost Mode successfully and I know the device received the lost mode request. What I want to know is, if someone else tried to wipe the device, will Apple send an email to me that the device has been found? Will I be able to see the location based on someone trying to wipe it in iTunes? Keep in mind it will not have cell service because ATT disabled the SIM card. I understand they won't be able to use the device.
