I'd be surprised if Apple uses a generic name like iPhone. Even iMobile is better than iPhone. Or perhaps something like Apple Mobile?

They went pretty generic with iPod.
Oh come on. The iPod? Where would you have come up with the name of an MP3 player as a Pod? Generic for an MP3 player would have been iMP3, or iDigitalMusic.

MacPhone isn't bad.

Think even more generic. As in pod: "a detachable or self-contained unit on an aircraft, spacecraft, vehicle, or vessel, having a particular function"... :)

iPod: I give it credit for being simple. As does iPhone, but the speculation and rumors behind 'iPhone' would be enough (I think) to deter Apple from actually using that name. Also I somehow feel your definition for 'Pod' is from the dictionary. And that's too easy.

iPhone is pretty generic, but on all of the sites I've researched it on, they all say iPhone, so that's what I think. Of course, it could be:

iSpeak

Can't think of anymore...

If it's not iPhone, Macphone is better and would probably be it :p .

Let me reword that:

I think Macphone WOULD be it. I mean, now everything is

Mac Pro

MacBook

MacBook Pro

The iMac is the only "i" something left computer-wise. I'm sure it would be MacPhone, to go along with the other "Mac" stuff.

I think MacPhone is probably the best shot. As others have said, it would go with their recent naming scheme.

Now that I think about it, MacPhone might not be the best idea. It would make people think you need a Mac to use it, and would probably push a lot of non-Mac people away. Calling it an iPhone would draw the huge iPod user group toward it immediately.

Honestly, I don't understand why Apple hasn't officially at least announced they are building one. People would hold off on buying one now from their provider, and couldn't end their contract or buying a new phone for it without a hefty price.

I understand them being quiet about when new iPods or computers are coming out because they want people to continue to buy the product they have now. But all the phones on the market now are not theirs, so there would be no loss to them if they announced there will be an Apple Phone in the near future for people to hold off for. It can only increase its sales and buildup.

One thing's for sure, it won't be as dumb as Rockr.
Edit: Or Chocolate for that matter (Verizon's new ugly music phone http://www.verizonwireless.com/chocolate/)

Of course it could just be marketed as an iPod with phone capabilities, kind of like the video iPod is marketed as an iPod with video cpapabilities. In that way the engadget thing makes sense because Apple may try to tie it to the iChat brand, however, that would also imply that iChat is going to go VOIP, which doesn't seem too likely.

I doubt it would have mac in the name, since 'mac' is reserved for Apple's line of computers to differentiate them from their other consumer products.

my ideas:
iPod Phone
iComm

iFon with a line over the o

iLink (apologies to Sony who will manufacture it to avoid a lawsuit)

iGo

iCu

iAm

iM

mPod

ok, and now for my cornyest one..... pPod (think about it)

I agree with above poster, there is no way that it will have Mac in the name. Mac = Macintosh. Macintosh is a computer NOT a cell phone.

Unless the new phone runs OS X.

That would be sweet. :) You'd only be able to fit like 1 dashboard widget on the screen though.
