Just bought my first Mac computer and was amazed to find
that if it didn't come with isight (as a Mac Pro does not), then
you are sh*t out of luck!

My Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000, that I used under XP doesn't
work with ichat, nor gets recognized with iChatUSBcam nor maccam.

You can see I tried everything.

So, the big question is, what quality webcam actually does
work with Mac OS X and (at the very least) iChat?

Thanks in advance!

Why were you amazed that the Mac Pro doesn't have an iSight. The Mac Pro is a tower, where on earth did you think they were going to put an iSight on a desktop tower which some ppl put on the floor.

Reread my post and you will see that was not what
I was saying.

I got no message when I installed the Logitech mac drivers.

All I know is that no video was displayed in iChat using iChatUSB
or maccam.

My camera is supposedly supported with these softwares.

I am trying these drivers right now

Oh well. Those drivers don't help.

I'd be willing to buy a new webcam if necessary, but people don't
seem to be happy with the external isight camera.

I'm looking for a good quality cam that will work as described
in my post above.

Thanks!

I know someone who uses the Quickcam Communicate STX. It works with Skype and I believe iChat as well using maccam. This is on an iBook G4 running the latest 10.4.

I have been very happy with my external iSight. Works with iChat and Skype and it can even record movie clips with it into iMovie or other applications. I don't really have any complaints.

Edit: make sure the camera is on and plugged in before starting up iChat or another program. I have had problems with iChat not recognizing a camera if it is plugged in after the program is already running. Also, make sure there are not two programs trying to access the camera at the same time. This can also cause problems.

Problem, I think, is with the newest Intel version of OS X.

Drivers just aren't being provided fast enough.

I'd look at the external isight, but posted reviews on the
$150 camera has been mediocre. It also seems that it's
rather difficult finding that camera in stock (unless I have been
looking in the wrong places).
