I'm not in the immediate need of upgrading my M1 MacBook Air, but I've been following the rumors for next years M6 powered MacBook Pros with a certain interest: OLED and slimmer design sounds great, touch screen not so much, IMHO.

There's also the rumored cheaper MacBook, powered with an A-chip, that seems a bit underpowered.

So, that leaves me to think that my next Mac will be another MacBook Air (and probably a 15" at that). But that has gotten me thinking of what I'd really like out of the next generation of MacBook Airs.

Basically, I'd like them to get (without spec'ing them way into MBP territory):
* A sligthly updated design (not going back to the wedge shape, but with the MBP slimming down, some modernization would be nice).
* With the MBPs going OLED, I'd love to see the MBA to "inherit" the Mini-LED screens from the MBP, ie. Liquid Retina XDR screens with 120Hz ProMotion.
* More and slightly fresher color options

And, that's it, really. Is that too much (or too little) to ask for?

  • No notch*
  • Onboard 5G data, on par with iPads
* I don't expect this to happen, as I don't think the tech is there yet, but one can dream

• Provide support to the Linux/BSD folks so it's easier to install alternatives to macOS Liquid Glass.
• Micro LED displays.

It depends on if the cheaper A-series MacBook arrives. If it doesn't, I would like the Air to not add anything to keep the cost down.

Wifi7.

Also more RAM at lower/equivalent price.

I think generally Apple does a good job of providing the right amount of RAM for most users, but since we're wishing, go a step beyond for a generation, move the needle earlier. Certain benchmarks would reflect it and it would be a lower entry price for the semi-power-user.

Sometimes I think more RAM and more SSD and more CPU power just leads to greater software bloat, which means you see no real changes.

A new design and better speakers.

Both felt like a downgrade (having recently moved from M1 to M4) - so those are areas where I'd like to see Apple do better next time.

windows 10!
or Mojave os!
and get rid of this unified memory hoax as 20GB added to a laptop should not eat up 40GB of systems data!

ooooh those new dell XPS seems more alluring by the day!

Intel WiFi and BT chip: so it will easier to install Linux when A. will declare it vintage.
And no more obnoxious notch, of course

I have an M4 MBA; 16/512. The biggest thing for me is the display. With MBP's moving to OLED I would like to see the MBA get the current MBP display. That would be a huge upgrade. I'm fine with the current ports, speakers, and the design. I know at some point it will get a redesign though. Maybe some different colors? Swap out starlight and midnight for two different colors and keep sky blue and silver.

I'll be waiting until 2028 at the earliest to upgrade my MacBook. It will be interesting to see where things are at the time for MacBooks.

Lower price.
120 hz.
OLED at the same resolution.
USB-C on both sides.
Colors (Orange! And not that yucky brown orange the iPhone Pro has).
The 12" Macbook chassis design (But with the current display sizes).

Otherwise I am happy.

Space Black color option and a base model with 24GB RAM, 1GB storage and SIM card tray for €999. 🙃

miniLED or OLED would be nice, but I don't think there's really a lot else I would ask for. I suppose it would be nice if they machined out speaker grilles for the next design update, better than the sound having to leak out through the keyboard, and I think it would make the keyboard deck of the 15" in particular look more finished. The latter isn't really a feature as such though, more of a design refinement.

I think it would be cool if it had a Thunderbolt 5 dock/stand option which featured a performance-boosting cooling fan. That way, you can have the most portable laptop coupled with a no-compromise desktop replacement.

While I have moved to an M2 Mini for most of my stuff, I still have my 2017 MacBook Air for some work, occasional lap computing and travel. When dealing with the former and the latter, its remarkable how often the ports that came with the 2017 are used. Be it a location that doesn't have stable Wi-Fi (for internet or peripherals), transferring files from a digital camera's SD card, or using that same slot for Time Machine.
So bring back ports rather than requiring users to have to go out and buy the additional hubs.

(Also, while I'm talking that era of Airs, remember when they were essentially the defacto laptop seen at cafes and libraries as used by students and road warriors? Price was a big part of that. Now priced themselves out of that market)

Matte screens. Less glare.

Additionally -
Stop trying to iOS'ify MacOS.
Stop adding "Squirrel!" apps to justify Apple Intelligence. Eating up storage and processor needs.

I am surprised no one have said Vapour Chamber. WIFi 7.

And lower price? Amazon is constantly offering $250 discount on all MacBook Air. And this isn't available world wide suggest there is a product pricing mismatch.

An option for a "cut-down" M6 Pro (could be software limited, reduced core count/binned chip).

I don't care much for the cores/power, as that it will obviously be thermally throttled. However, the additional RAM and bandwidth could be nice
