It certainly is interesting that Apple has decided to release updates to TWO products a mere week before Macworld. I'm not sure if this has happened before. This only leaves one obvious conclusion. They have such good things scheduled for Macworld and don't won't all the news to be cluttered with these "no big shakes" updates.

What is your opinion on this? What do you think this leaves for Macworld? Are you satisfied with the Mac Pro? Obviously it appears no blu ray, but is there a chance they just don't want to announce it till Macworld?

Well, obviously there will be the ultra thin notebook. Do you think that will be on the macbook line, the mbp line, or just be a new line of it's own?

I see Macworld shaping up to be all about portability, accessibility, & expanded functionality. So I expect to see:

Portability
- refresh of the mb pro laptops, possibly even a refresh of the macbooks
- iPod touch with 32gb
- the ultraportable announced and positioned in between the macbook and the mb pro
- multi-touch tablet with a 7 inch screen, 32gb ssd, wifi and bt, isight camera
- I believe Apple will wait till later in the year to announce the availability of a 3G iPhone which will come with 16gb

Accessibility
- iTunes movie rentals and expanded selection for purchase
- Ability to download movies, tv shows, podcasts, etc over wifi (iPhone, iPod touch, & tablet)

Expanded functionality
- iPhone/iPod touch update with all features that were leaked and few surprises like (ichat, copy & paste, finder w/coverflow, doc/e-book reader)
- Full preview of the SDK for the iPhone, iPod touch & new tablet
- Announcement of a number of third party apps for the iPhone & iPod touch available for download thru iTunes
- Ability to use 'back to my mac' feature with iPhone, iPod touch, & new tablet

Out-on-a-limb prediction: Announcement of iWork touch, a version of iWork for the iPhone, iPod touch, & new tablet with a reworked UI that works better with a touch interface.

heres my speculation.. or what i would like apple to do...

Cinema Displays:
low end: 20"
mid range: 24"
high end: 30"
(new design, built in iSight)

Desktop:
low end: Mac Mini
mid range: New Mac (user upgradeable video card, hard drive and memory)
high end: Mac Pro

Laptop:
low end: 13" MacBook
mid range: 15" MacBook Pro
high end: 17" MacBook Pro
(aluminum casing, new style keyboard, same slim new look for all models, external optical drive for 13")

All-in-One:
low end: iMac 20"
mid range: iMac 24"
hig end: iMac 30"

iPod:
low end: iPod Shuffle
mid range: iPod Nano
high end: iPod Classic

Touch:
low end: iPod Touch
mid range: iPhone
high end: MacBook Touch

so in summary for macworld we will get: cinema displays re-design, new midrange upgradeable apple desktop, re-design for whole laptop line, new iMac 30" model, and a new "touch interface" ultraportable...

this will make it much easier for people to decide which new mac to get and will give the whole product line up the same low/mid/high configurations...

maybe the upgradable mid range desktop and the 30" iMac will not happen, but i think the rest is a nice summary of all the speculations and rumors going around...

just my thoughts...

...Lots!

o 30" iMac Pro

o BTO Blu-Ray burner option on Mac Pro / iMac Pro

o Full-featured 12" 160 PPI touch-screen dockable portable tablet computer

o "iLife touch" featuring "Garageband touch"

o New-look Apple Cinema Displays

o Portable A/V projection presentation system w/ remote

o iPhone coming to Canada next quarter

o New downloadable features added to iPhone, possibly push Gmail

o Flash for iPhone / iPod touch

o iTunes 8 featuring Movie Rentals, also for :apple:TV

o Self-contained Mini Apple Stores set-up inside Best Buy's

o Partnership with Bose to develop improved speaker systems

o Next-Generation 1600Mbps FireWire interface

Why would you suspect a BTO Blu Ray after todays update? They wouldn't have released it this early if that had been an option.

Hoping for new Cinema Displays to include HDCP-compliant DVI, Component and HDMI. Blu Ray support to follow, then 13" MacBook Pro.

iPhone updates (SDK and 1.1.3), Leopard 10.5.2, iTunes HD / rentals. That'd do it for me. :p

Well, the Best Buy thing already has.
Well, then that's not really new, and they won't talk about it.

o 30" iMac Pro
There will never be an 'iMac Pro', professionals don't want an all-in-one.
BTO Blu-Ray burner option on Mac Pro / iMac Pro
No way they announce this after the Mac Pro was announced today.

Blu-ray would be possible at NAB to coincide with a DVDSP5 update to support blu-ray authoring.

o Full-featured 12" 160 PPI touch-screen dockable portable tablet computer
Tablet isn't going to happen yet.

o "iLife touch" featuring "Garageband touch"
See above.

o New-look Apple Cinema Displays
They aren't going to change the design since the new Mac Pro case is the same. Plus I don't believe they can get 30'' LED backlight units yet. Maybe at WWDC.

o Portable A/V projection presentation system w/ remote
Pointless. There are already a bunch of companies that make projectors. Plus you can use the apple remote with keynote already.

o iPhone coming to Canada next quarter
They'll go to Canada to announce that, like they did in London.

o New downloadable features added to iPhone, possibly push Gmail

o Flash for iPhone / iPod touch
These might be the only possible updates.

o iTunes 8 featuring Movie Rentals, also for :apple:TV
It's going to be 7.6, other rumors confirmed this.

o Partnership with Bose to develop improved speaker systems
Bose sucks and apple doesn't make speakers anyways.

o Next-Generation 1600Mbps FireWire interface
The next firewire is 3200Mbps, and it uses the same spec as FW800 (they're both 1394b). It's also pin compatible, and I believe current FW800 machines would just need a firmware update for it. However, there aren't any FW3200 devices out yet.

Why would you suspect a BTO Blu Ray after todays update? They wouldn't have released it this early if that had been an option.

I could see Steve making a big deal in the keynote about the availability of Blu Ray and not wanting that to go out silently. That being the case, I'd see it as a CTO available on Mac Pro and MacBook Pro and iMacs at the same time. Heck, no reason not the entire line really.

When Apple does embrace BluRay, it will be with a big splash. Could the main theme of this years MW be HD?
- available blu ray drives
- HD screen option in MBP
- HD content in the iTunes store
- HD on an upgraded :apple:TV
- BluRay drive option on the :apple:TV

I'm not sure that I believe this myself, but it would make for a great keynote!

I'm just worried that all mbp's will come with glossy screens.¨Personally I hope there design stays like it is. Bigger resolution & hard drive would be enough for me. Otherwise I have plan b & c

( b = buy the current 15' demo model at the store 20% off )
( c = buy a used mbp 15' for a really good price )

regards

I'm just worried that all mbp's will come with glossy screens.

Yeah, that won't happen. Apple would lose their entire creative professionals (graphic design, photographers, video editors, etc) market.

No doubt, but sometimes it's fun to let your imagination run wild and dream...
Which would be fine if it wasn't for all the posters who come here afterwards disappointed everything they wanted, or some other poster mentioned, didn't get released or isn't up to the specs they want.
