I have a few last questions (before ordering) to those using the 27 inch iMac as a monitor.

So, from what I can find, it seems Command F2 will switch between the two input sources right?

Also, the iMac must be booted up into OS in order for it to work right? Well this leads to a question. Since this is the case, I wonder, are there going to be any performance issues if used with another computer like a Mac Pro? I mean the 24 inch ACD is just a "dumb" screen, so what is causing the requirement to have the iMac booted into the OS in order to use it as a monitor? And will that same requirement cause the 27 screen to act any different that say a "dumb" 24 incher? Which graphics card would be in play? I would think that if using the 27 as a monitor for the Mac Pro, the Mac Pro graphics card would be the one in play. But since the iMac seems to need to be booted in OS, I started wondering.

And to anyone using the 27 as a monitor with your Mac Pro (I know there is at least one guy here doing it...with a sweet setup including TWO additional 24 inchers), how well would this work: Say I was using the Mac Pro to do a lengthy H.264 encode or render job of 5 or 6 hours. Could I start that batch job on the Mac Pro, then simply switch the input on the 27 from the Mac Pro to the internal iMac and then go on about the business of using the iMac for other tasks?

Then of course I know there is the one issue (or at the very least inconvenience) concerning what occurs when the external source (ie Mac Pro) goes to sleep, followed by the iMac going to sleep. And that does suck, but at least it will work, just being a serious inconvenience.

Anyway, I just wanted to find out the skinny on this whole deal, since I, like some others I would imagine, am getting the iMac with the intent of using as a monitor for a Mac Pro...but still want the benefit of having a nice second computer.

Regards,

G.
