Keep their phones in a case? I'd rather just plug mine in then have to take the case off every night to charge.

Apparently, not necessarily.

Apple iPhone X Silicone Case Description:
Designed by Apple to complement iPhone X, the form of the silicone case fits snugly over the volume buttons, side button, and curves of your device without adding bulk. A soft microfiber lining on the inside helps protect your iPhone. On the outside, the silky, soft-touch finish of the silicone exterior feels great in your hand. And you can keep it on all the time, even when you’re charging wirelessly.

edit: the same applies for Apple's leather cases, according to their website

It should be case dependent. For example, thick, metal cases probably won't work. Silicon, plastic, leather cases shouldn't have an issue.

Since the 6 I've noticed more and more naked iPhones than before. And that's when I started using a case after dropping my 6 a few times in its first week.

The thing I want is a battery case that transfers the power wirelessly, no need to have a jack in the bottom of the case. Think about it. Plop the case, with the phone in it, on the power mat and they both just charge.

I don't see why this can't happen now with the iPhone 8 and X.
