While I decided to pass on the MacBook Pro retina this time around, I was thinking of buying a specced out model next time. Kept thinking about it and realized the following:
1. It would cost me about $3,000 for the laptop PLUS $1,000 for the monitor, so $4k total for a complete system.
2. Most of my usage (80%) is at home plugged into the Apple display (currently).
3. It feels now it would make a lot more sense to just buy an iMac (once they are updated). A specced out iMac is around $2,500 and might have superior performance, and already comes with a screen.
4. For $1,500 I can get a regular MacBook or the base 13" for the 20% of the time I need to use it outside. Might not even have to for a while since my 15 retina from 2012 is still plenty good if I am just using it for the outside needs.
Would come out about even money-wise (or save $1,500 depending on if I get a new MacBook or not) and give me the following benefits:
1. Potentially much better performance (depending on what they put into the next iMacs) for the times I use it the most.
2. An Apple branded screen (since its built into the iMac)
3. Redundancy. If the laptop breaks or gets stolen, it would be really tough to replace plus I'd lose a lot of productivity. With two computers, if one breaks or something happens to it, I don't miss much.
4. Portability. By going with a 12" MacBook or base 13" Pro, it would be a lot more portable than a 15" pro.
What do you guys think?
My main question surrounds performance. I wonder how the high end iMac stacks up in 4K video editing, gaming (basic), and other performance metrics to the 15" pro. Of course, I'd get the next release of the iMac, but if their performance is close or the iMac is even better now then that's just bound to be the cherry on top for this plan (since the next iMac is bound to be even better).
