Soft boot G4 iMac spherical base

We have an old iMac G4 with the spherical base. It worked when we gave it to our daughter at Christmas, but when she unpacked it, she got the frowny face when she tried to boot it up.

I know there is a soft boot that can be done on this computer, because I had to do it about 13 months ago.

Can someone please help me?

It could be anything from a broken OS X installation to a bad hard drive.
