My 2008 Macbook is still running well enough. It has a two-year old SSD, a three-year-old battery, and enough RAM. I have cleaned out the fans and heat sink a few times.

I am planning on getting a 2016 MBP but not quite yet. If there's a software or firmware update that improves the battery, or a hardware fix or price adjustment coming up, I'm not in dire straits and I can sit tight.

But there's a kind of crunchy whirring noise that's been going on for a few months. It's very faint/quiet (It's quiet enough that my boyfriend thinks I'm imagining things and trying to find an excuse to get a new computer). It's a gentle vibration, like a purring cat. I do not think it's the fan (because it's ongoing, and doesn't ramp up when the fan ramps up). It shouldn't be the hard drive (because SSD). It is most noticeable for the first 10-15 minutes when I disconnect from power and then gets much fainter, but if I listen for it, it's pretty constant.

Okay, so it doesn't sound so worrisome, right? And maybe it's not, but it's weird because it's new, and out of nowhere.

Any ideas about what it could be, how worrisome it might be, and how I might troubleshoot or fix it? I can open it up, but if I don't think it's the fan I don't know what I should be looking at.

I am not super knowledgeable about the workings of the computer, but I have screwdrivers and I'm comfortable checking it out.

Thanks in advance.
