I arrived in Tokyo on May 12, 2011.

At the Narita Airport, I noticed that the SoftBank booth had SIM rental for iPhone 4.

Two years ago, SoftBank suspended SIM rental for iPhone because customers kept racking up thousands of dollars from data access. That was when I had a jailbroken & unlocked iPhone 3G but could not rent a SIM at the same SoftBank booth at the Narita Airport because of the SIM rental suspension back then.

Unfortunately, my iPhone 4 is not unlocked though it is jailbroken. The baseband is too new to be unlocked. So, the SoftBank rental SIM would not have done any good.

But, if you are one of the lucky owners of iPhone 4's with an older baseband that is unlocked (on top of jailbroken), be excited to be able to rent a SIM at the SoftBank booth at the Narita Airport. Their rental SIM for iPhone 4 has a regular voice plan PLUS a fixed rate data plan now. That's how they do it this time around.

At the SoftBank booth, I specifically asked if an iPhone 4 must be unlocked in order for their rental SIM to work. Of course as expected, the answer was YES.
